About

Dr. Lenette M. Jones is the Inaugural Endowed McLelland Professor of Nursing and Assistant Professor at University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. She is a member of the 2021 Cohort of the Betty Irene Moore Fellowship for Nurse Innovators and Leaders and a Fellow of the American Heart Association. Dr. Jones received her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Case Western Reserve University. 

Her Story

As a community advocate and cardiovascular health scientist, Dr. Jones is working to achieve health equity for minoritized patients.

 

She is an expert in self-management strategies; her program of research is focused on uncovering the mechanisms – biological, psychological, social, and physical – of self-management interventions.

 

She uses neuroimaging to explore the brain activity associated with behaviors, such as diet, exercise, and medication-taking.

Her Vision

Dr. Jones leads an interdisciplinary research team to design and evaluate multi-pronged, novel, and scalable interventions. Her work directly addresses hypertension inequities in Detroit Michigan, a city where over half the population grapples high blood pressure.

DESIGN AND EVALUATION

Dr. Jones developed the WHISE (Wellness, Hypertension, Information sharing, Self-Management, Education) intervention – a theoretically-based mobile application that provides education on self-management strategies and promotes health information sharing for Black women with hypertension.

WHISE INTERVENTION

Supported through federal, private, or internal sponsors – totaling more than $2.2 million dollars, Dr. Jones creates synergy between academia and the community by partnering with organizations to secure extramural funding and implement culturally tailored programs.

 

She is an active member of several local, regional, national, and international organizations including the American Heart Association, Midwest Nursing Research Society, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated., and Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated.

COMMUNITY AND ACADEMIA

Dr. Jones is the proud mother of two beautiful daughters, Sidney and Riley, sister of OB/GYN physician, Dr. Antonette Whitehead, daughter of history professor, Otis Whitehead and retired banker/homemaker, Toni Whitehead. 

 

She is a faithful member of First AME Church of Farmington Hills, where she serves on the Board of Trustees.
